Bison Grapplers Win 12 of 14 in Domination Over Tyrone

CLEARFIELD – It was a quick night of wrestling in the Arthur J. Weiss gymnasium Tuesday night, as the Bison won 12 matches, five by forfeit, to defeat the Tyrone Golden Eagles, 65-10. Of the nine matches wrestled, only three went past the first period, and Clearfield (9-5) guaranteed themselves a winning record for the season

The match began at 120, and in less than three minutes, the Bison led the match 18-0. After Peyton Smay (9-9) received a forfeit, Matt Ryan (17-5) pinned Isaac Parks at 126 in 55 seconds. Then at 132 Jude Pallo (11-10) pinned Noah Sprankle in 1:47.

The match shortly turned tides in the 138 pound bout when Bison senior Quentin Edwards (6-14) was major decisioned by Golden Eagle Alex Weaver (10-14) 15-7, but Bison Nathan Barr delivered a quick payback at 145 when he put Tyrone’s Brandon Ixtepan (2-19) on his back and pinned him in just 1:01. This put the match at 24-4, Clearfield.

Bison junior Caleb Freeland (14-6) then went out to wrestle at 152, and he used a two on one tllt, multiple times, to tech fall Tyrone’s Cameron Brandt (2-5) in an eye-popping 1:17. With Colton Smay receiving a forfeit at 160, Clearfield led 35-4 going into Hunter Wright’s match at 170.

In the first period of the Bison senior’s match, Wright used a takedown to lead Tyrone’s Thomas Hicks 2-0, and then he used a reversal in the second period to be up 4-0. However, Wright found himself hanging onto a merkle that he couldn’t turn into an offensive gain, and found himself being reversed, to lead 4-2 going into the third period. Following a penalty point in Wright’s favor, Hicks eventually gave him an escape with seconds remaining to attempt a takedown, but Wright held on for a 6-2 victory.

Following Wright’s hard fought decision, Clearfield received three forfeits before Bison sophomore Jon Doran (2-2) wrestled at 285 against Tyrone’s Daniel Peterson. In Doran’s fourth wrestling match, he was able to use a front headlock, “head-in-the-hole” go behind takedown into a half nelson for the fall in 1:24. Though Doran won a match by forfeit against Saint Marys, this was his first varsity victory against an opponent, which is always an extremely rewarding moment. With that victory, the Bison led the Golden Eagles 62-4.

Following Bison freshman Angelo Maines (8-13) getting pinned by Hunter Walk in 1:06, Johnathon Thomas (9-10) wrestled one of his best matches all season against Tyrone’s Mason Walls. Thomas was able to notch four takedowns to win 8-3, looking very good with a single leg and taking his time finishing each one. With the decision, Clearfield defeated Tyrone by a final score of 65-10.

Clearfield will wrestle this weekend at the Ultimate Warrior Tourney in West Branch. They will face some common opponents, including, but not limited to, Bald Eagle, Philipsburg, and Tyrone.  Then next weekend, Clearfield will prepare for the Team District IX Championships. It’s going to be a wild couple of weekends, and Gant will be there to cover all the results.
