The Senate has advanced a short term spending deal, moving one step closer to reopening the government and funding it for the next three weeks. The Senate voted 81-18 to approve the procedural “cloture” motion vote and end debate. The final vote on passage is expected later Monday afternoon.
Only two Republicans — Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah — joined with 16 Democrats to vote no against advancing the bill. Arizona Sen. John McCain was not present for the vote as he is back in his home state receiving treatment for brain cancer.
The key procedural vote was held three days after the government officially shut down Friday at midnight.
