Elk County Catholic Takes Command Early To Defeat Lady Tide 47-30

CURWENSVILLE – After the Curwensville Lady Tide jumped out to a 7-4 lead early in the first quarter the Elk County Catholic (ECC) Lady Crusaders went on a 12-0 run that enabled the visitors from St. Marys to take a 16-10 margin into the second eight minutes.

That run, and that lead, would fuel the Lady Crusaders onto a 47-30 victory over Curwensville on the home floor of the Lady Tide.

Madison Weber, a junior for Curwensville, scored seven of the Lady Tide’s first quarter points and ended the night with a team high 16 tallies.

The Lady Crusaders poured more fuel on the fire in the second quarter as it outscored Curwensville 15-4 to take a commanding 31-14 lead at the intermission.

Curwensville never did cut into the ECC margin in the second half, and at one point in the third frame trailed the Lady Crusaders 40-16.

To the credit of the Curwensville squad it would outscore Elk County Catholic 14-7 over the remaining minutes of the contest.

Somewhat of a moral victory was the fact that the Lady Tide held ECC to just one fourth quarter point while scoring 10.

The Lady Crusaders were paced on offense by sophomore Taylor Newton with 16.

ECC was just six of 20 from the foul line with Curwensville going one for three.

Lady Tide assistant coach, Jim Hoyt, said afterwards, “At times we let one player, one really bad quarter get away from us. I just hope that going forward we can handle the pressure because we have a tough schedule ahead with three games each week for the next four weeks coming up.”

ECC is now 8-4 on the year while the Tide lost for the sixth straight game and are now 1-8 on the 2017-18 season.

The junior varsity game was also won by the Lady Crusaders as it defeated Curwensville by a score
of 22-19.
