DuBois Library to Offer “Hour of Code” Program

DUBOIS – In December the DuBois Public Library will host a new program called “Hour of Code.”

Based on a global initiative, “Hour of Code” will introduce the community to many new STEM activities that are available at DuBois Library’s upcoming programs and events.

With technology changing various industries, computing knowledge has become part of a well-rounded skillset.

Coding has also become a hot button topic in education and workforce development over the past several years.

In this technological age, more than 50 percent of jobs require some level of technology aptitude and that number is growing every year.

The “Hour of Code” is a one-hour introduction to computer science, and it’s designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.

You can learn more at http://HourofCode.com, try an hour yourself or host an “Hour of Code” event to introduce others to the world of computing.

“Hour of Code” activities are being held all over the world during Computer Science Education Week, which is Dec. 4-10.

Computer Science Education Week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (Dec. 9, 1906).

The DuBois Public Library’s “Hour of Code” allows children who are in grades kindergarten through 12th grade to sample several different technologies that will be used at events throughout 2018.

They will have the opportunity to play a banana piano utilizing Makey Makey kits, observe a VEX robot with a claw to pick up items, use a SparkFun kit to write code to create a rainbow and draw a trail for an OzoBot to follow.

The DuBois Public Library received all of these technologies as part of ILEAD USA grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, Governor.

You can drop by to visit the DuBois Public Library’s “Hour of Code” on Monday, Dec. 11 between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department.
