DUBOIS — Thiel senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) tied his career low with a 69 at the DuBois Country Club – where he is the reigning club champion – to win the Penn State DuBois Invitational for the second year in a row last Tuesday. Senior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) carded a 78 to help Pitt-Bradford set a school record with a 301 to claim the championship of the seven-team tournament.
All four Bradford linksmen broke 80 to erase the previous record of 306 set in 2002 and tied in 2006.
Penn State DuBois sophomore Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) turned in an 84, which didn’t count in the second-place Lions’ 314 aggregate.
Thiel finished sixth with a 351.
Thorp has been medalist in all five of Thiel’s events.
He recorded an 85-79-164 to place 60th among 100 golfers from 18 teams who played in the two-day Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational hosted by Allegheny at the Country Club of Meadville Sept. 10-11. The Tomcats were 17th with a scores of 353 and 339 for a 692 total.
Last Wednesday, Thorp posted an 81 at the Grove City Country Club for an 18th-place finish among 48 players in the Grove City College Fall Invitational. Thiel’s 347 aggregate was good for seventh place in the 10-team tourney.
Gardner tied for sixth in the 40-player Penn State DuBois invite a week after claiming fifth place in the Medaille (N.Y.) Invitational with an 80 over the Glen Oak Country Club course as the Panthers finished runners-up with a 326. That tourney drew 29 players from five teams.
The Panthers traveled south last weekend for the Penn State Invitational at the Sinking Valley Country Club near Bellwood Saturday and the Mount Aloysius Invitational at the Summit Country Club at Cresson Sunday, and Gardner scored 82 and 84 in the back-to-back rounds.
He placed 42nd among 84 players Saturday when Pitt-Bradford wound up sixth in the 14-team tournament and 47th among 90 players Sunday when the Panthers were seventh in a 15-team tourney.
Orsich made his debut for Penn State DuBois with an 80 at the Penn State Blue Course to help the Lions win the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference Meet with a 318 total.
He had an 87 at the Mount Aloysius Invitational as the Lions finished seventh with a 322.

FOOTBALL
WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) still is perfect after three games with 12 extra points and three field goals for Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which is off to a 2-1 start.
His 24-yard field goal with 6:09 remaining in the second quarter got the Engineers on the board against Becker at Alumni Stadium Saturday evening, and he tacked on five PATs in the 38-0 win seen by 1,640 fans of the cross-town teams.
He also punted four times for a 31.5-yard average.
On Sept. 9, Spencer booted the extra point following the first touchdown of WPI’s 36-14 loss to visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N.Y.
He also averaged 33.4 yards on seven punts, one a season-long 49-yarder, in the Transit Trophy Game, which was the 111th meeting between the two schools and attracted a crowd of 2,645 into Alumni Stadium.
Spencer is second in scoring for WPI with 21 points and is averaging 32.5 yards for 15 punts, pinning opponents inside their 20 six times and having eight kicks fair caught.

BEAVER FALLS — Geneva senior safety Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) was involved in six tackles, one a nine-yard sack, in a tough 31-27 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Saint Vincent Saturday night.
The Golden Tornadoes (1-2, 1-1 PAC) had leads of 20-17 and 27-24 before the visitors scored the winning touchdown with 4:48 remaining to disappoint most of the 4,785 fans in the Reeves Field crowd.
The previous Saturday at Bethany, W.Va., Jacobson had one solo stop in Geneva’s 34-13 victory over Bethany with 814 fans watching under the Bison Stadium lights.
His season totals are four solo tackles and two assists.

BETHANY, W.Va. — Junior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) made one solo tackle as Thiel opened its Presidents’ Athletic Conference slate with a 28-13 win over Bethany in front of 887 fans at Bison Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Tomcats outscored their hosts 21-0 in the second half to break into the win column after two non-conference losses.
Maines has logged three tackles in the three games.

COLLEGEVILLE — Senior left guard Jon Janocko (Clearfield) extended his consecutive starts to 12 as the Juniata offense amassed 585 yards, including 242 on the ground, but the visiting Eagles wound up on the short end of a 35-28 final because of five turnovers against undefeated Ursinus at Patterson Field Saturday.
The Eagles (1-2) owned one-point leads on three occasions, the last 21-20 early in the fourth quarter, before suffering their second straight Centennial Conference loss in front of 3,000 fans.
Janocko and the Eagle attack unit struggled in their conference opener Sept. 9, falling to Franklin & Marshall 52-7 in front of 2,397 fans at Sponaugle-Williamson Stadium.

WILLIAMSPORT — Junior starting center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and his Lycoming offense teammates were stuck in low gear against unbeaten Middle Atlantic Conference opponents the last two Saturdays, losing 34-3 to No. 12-ranked Delaware Valley and 21-17 to Albright at David Person Field.
The Warriors (0-3, 0-2 MAC) were limited to just 82 net yards and three first yards by the Aggies with 1,746 fans in the crowd and 174 total yards by the Lions with 1,245 followers on hand.
Lycoming did build a 17-7 halftime lead against Albright, but two Lion touchdowns in the third quarter decided the outcome.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CLARION — Senior defender Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) made two starts in her five appearances as Clarion broke even, 2-2-1, the last two weeks.
The Golden Eagles (3-3-1) defeated Shippensburg 2-1 Saturday for a 2-3-1 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
They also beat Ursuline (Ohio) by the same score in a non-conference game last Tuesday.
Their deadlock was 1-1 against Mercyhurst in double overtime.
They were held scoreless at West Chester and at Slippery Rock in 2-0 and 1-0 setbacks.
Freeberg has registered one shot.
ERIE — Junior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) played in three games and senior midfielder McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) made one appearance for Penn State Behrend, which won three of five non-conference outings the last two weeks.
The Lions (4-3) earned a split at the Fredonia (N.Y.) Blue Devil Tournament Sept. 8-9 by trimming the hosts 5-2 after dropping a 2-1 decision to Oswego.
They also two Ohio opponents, nipping Case Western Reserve 1-0 and Mount Union 3-2 in overtime.
On Saturday, the Lions were dealt a 4-3 loss by host Washington & Jefferson.

HARRISBURG — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) got off one shot in her two starts for Penn State Harrisburg in the D.C. Classic hosted by Catholic University Sept. 9-10.
The Lions lost 3-1 to Randolph-Macon (Va.) but bounced back to blank Guilford (N.C.) 1-0.
Grice, who has been credited with two shots in six appearances, also started in the Lions’ 1-0 overtime victory over Elizabethtown Sept. 7 and subbed in a 10-0 rout of Clark’s Summit Thursday.
Penn State Harrisburg (5-2) was edged 2-1 by host Eastern Saturday.
