Calvin Gene Thomas, 86, of Houtzdale died Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at his home.

Born Dec. 13, 1930 in Brisbin, he was the son of the late Cyril D Thomas and Jennette (Lobb) Thomas.

He was a member of the Brisbin Baptist Church. He was also a Boy Scout leader for many years and a member of the National Camper and Hikers Association.

He retired from Sears where he was employed as a service technician for more than 25 years. He was well-known in the area as a general repairman who could fix almost anything.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On July 20, 1958 in the Brisbin Baptist Church, he married Julia (LeGrand) Thomas, who preceded him in death Jan. 15, 2017.

He is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Ellis) Kirshner of Franklinville, NJ and two sons, Donald (Tina) Thomas of New Providence and Joseph (Laura) Thomas of Kansas City, Mo.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Joshua and David Kirshner, Kaitlyn (Chris) Johnston and Andrew and Taylor Thomas and two brothers, Warren Lee Thomas of Houtzdale and John William Thomas of Jamestown, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brisbin Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Melhorn officiating.

Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery, Brisbin, with graveside military honors accorded by the Houtzdale American Legion Honor Guard.
