Parker Dam Programs Announced for Sept. 8-28

PENFIELD – Staff members at the Parker Dam State Park have announced the program schedule for Sept. 8-28.

Friday, Sept. 8 

In the Long Run…: 

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

This interesting look at Gifford Pinchot, a Pennsylvania governor and conservationist, is a part of the Pennsylvania’s Conservation Heroes series. 

Saturday, Sept. 9 

GPS Basics: 

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom 

Whether it’s for hiking, geocaching, hunting or any other outdoor pursuits, being able to competently use a GPS receiver can be an important skill.

Fungi: PA’s Hidden Treasures: 

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Mushrooms and other fungi are an incredibly diverse group of organisms.  You can learn more about this overlooked treasure of Pennsylvania’s forests and how important they truly are.

Friday, Sept. 15

Things Naturalists Do: 

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

So, what are some of the quirky things that some outdoor enthusiasts do?  Can you call crayfish and fireflies; coax butterflies; and mess with moths?  Yep.  You can do that and then some.  This will consist of a PowerPoint and lecture.

Saturday, Sept. 16

Hike to the Vista: 

3 p.m. – bench near CCC Museum 

You can enjoy a hike to the vista overlooking the park.  The climb is somewhat strenuous; bring water and wear comfortable hiking shoes.

Earth Day History: 

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Forty-seven years ago…  You can enjoy this look back in time to learn what Earth Day was all about, and what it can continue to be today.  Includes slide/tape presentation (pre-PowerPoint technology).

Tuesday, Sept. 19

Night Sky Program: 

8:30 PM – Beach (near spillway/CCC Museum)

The dark of the moon (new moon) is the best time to look at the stars (and planets).  The park will have its two telescopes out for some night sky viewing.  You should be able to see Saturn, and perhaps even Neptune.

Thursday, Sept. 28

Explore Archery: 

5 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom 

Have you always wanted to learn to shoot a bow and arrow?  You can come and learn the basics of archery, along with range rules and safety procedures.  Bows have up to a 25-pound pull; smaller archers may have difficulty.
