David C. Falvo, 52, of Girard, and formerly of Clearfield, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at St. Vincent Health Center surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He bravely fought a courageous battle for many years with Rheumatoid Arthritis. He is finally pain-free and resting in the loving arms of our good Lord.

He was born Oct. 13, 1964 in Clearfield, a son of the late Carl A. and Thelma A. (Evans) Falvo.

He graduated from the Clearfield High School in 1982. Following high school, he graduated in 1986 from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.

In 1989, he received his Masters of Education in mathematics, also from Penn State University. He began his employment career at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, where he taught mathematics from 1989 until present. 

He also worked for Larson Texts as a co-author of mathematic textbooks from 1992 to present.

He received the “Teacher of the Year” award by the Mathematical Association of America in 2000. He was nominated five times for the Penn State Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award.

He was a greatly loved teacher by his students, and he was highly respected by his fellow Penn State faculty and staff. Throughout his career, he always received excellent evaluations from his students.

He was an active member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5430, Girard, the Penn State Alumni Association and the Clearfield Baseball Association.

He loved playing baseball as a first baseman for Clearfield High School, Penn State DuBois, Budget Beverage of the Mountain League, Buster’s Brewers of the Federation League, and The Meatheads of the Old Town Softball League.

He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Penn State Nittany Lions. He enjoyed running, working out at the gym, doing yard work and detailing his beloved Jeep Wrangler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James and Sophie Falvo; his maternal grandparents, David and Hazel Evans; his sister-in-law, Brenda Whitman; and a niece, Katrina Whitman.

He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his loving wife, Susan J. (Housley) Falvo, to whom he was married Aug. 17, 1991 in Philipsburg, and his daughter, Sofia M. Falvo, who was his pride and joy.

He will be greatly missed by his brother, Mark A. Falvo; father- and mother-in-law, William H. and Mary Kay Housley; sister-in-law, Beth Laird (Thomas); and brother-in-law, William H. Housley Jr. (Suzy).

He will also be greatly missed by his nephews, Nathan Laird, Jonathan Whitman and Luke Housley; nieces, Sarah Whitman, Kylie Laird and Eve Housley; god-daughter and niece, Paige Housley; god-son, Seth King; an aunt, Elizabeth Falvo; several cousins; and many dear friends.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard, and they are invited to attend a prayer service there at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The service will be followed by the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave., Girard, with the Rev. William O’Brien as celebrant and the Rev. William Miller as co-celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sofia’s Educational Fund, C/O Edder Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Crown Crest Cemetery, Clearfield County.

A memorial service will be held in Clearfield and announced at a later date.
