Lester J. “Peck” Shaffer, 88, of Clearfield died Saturday, May 13, 2017 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 15, 1928 in Dalmatia, Pa., he was the son of John and Ruth (Kerstetter) Shaffer. 

Mr. Shaffer was a heavy equipment operator for 47 years. He had last worked for the North Cambria Coal Co. and the Bentley Coal Co. He was a member of the United Mine Workers.

He was a devoted husband and a loving father. He enjoyed being a handyman around the house, working on cars and going to auctions.

He also loved spending time with his family, especially when there were babies around. He had a true gift when it came to calming down crying babies.

On Aug. 15, 1949 in Maryland, he wed the former Julia Rose Seaburn, who preceded him in death Nov. 12, 2016. 

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Shaffer; his step-mother, Veronica; brothers, William, Robert, Gene, Kenneth and Carl; a great-granddaughter, Hayley Rumsky; and a great-grandson, Andrew Archer.

Surviving are three children, Stanley L. Shaffer and his wife, Connie of Alabama, Marcella J. Cramer and her husband, Logan of Clearfield and Richard A. Shaffer and his wife, Amy of Apollo.   

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Lester “Buddy” Shaffer, Jessica Ward, Brandi Ward, Andrew Shaffer, Leah Collins, Michelle Wilson, Jennifer Campolong, Lori Murphy, Mia Shaffer and Dutch Shaffer; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, Joseph Shaffer and a sister, Norma Shaffer.

Funeral services for Lester Shaffer will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville, with the Rev. George Cannon officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Friends will be received from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
