Detour will be in place through Sept. 1
PIKE TOWNSHIP – Beginning July 5, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will be working to replace a bridge on Nicholson Road (Route 3032) in Pike Township, Clearfield County.
The bridge spans Hartshorn Run, about two miles north of Curwensville. Replacement work will require closing the bridge and a detour will be in effect for the duration of the project, July 5 through Sept. 1.
Official detour signing will direct drivers to use Routes 3015, 879, 1001 and 2014. PennDOT will open the new bridge before Sept. 1 if work progress allows. Drivers familiar with the area may choose alternate routes.
The existing bridge will be replaced with a new GRS-IBS (Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge System) bridge. The GRS approach is new technology that offers a method of bridge support that blends the roadway into the bridge superstructure, saving time and money.
Replacing the existing bridge will allow PennDOT to remove it from Clearfield County’s structurally deficient list. The current 15-foot bridge dates from 1934 and carries an average of 140 vehicles daily.
Project work will be done by crews from PennDOT Clearfield County Maintenance. Work items will include excavation, removal of the existing bridge, construction of the new bridge, back-filling, guide rail installation and paving. All work is weather dependent.
Drivers are reminded to follow detour signing, use caution in and around work zones and always buckle up.
