WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
BEAVER FALLS — Senior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) contributed to Clarion’s championship performance at the Geneva Invitational with three high finishes at the Merriman Athletic Complex last Wednesday.
Shomo earned second-place points with a leap of 4.78 meters (15 feet, 8¼ inches) in the long jump, finished sixth with a time of 27.83 seconds in the 200-meter dash and sprinted the third leg for the 4×100 relay foursome that was second in 49.55 seconds.
The Golden Eagles piled up 203 points to outdistance six other teams.

MEN’S GOLF
GROVE CITY — Junior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) was medalist for Thiel with a six-over-par 78 in Grove City’s McBride-Behringer-Allen Invitational at the Grove City Country Club last Tuesday.
The score, which matched his low for the spring season, gave Thorp a tie for sixth place among the 43 players from eight teams.
The Tomcats finished sixth with a 334 total.

BASEBALL
ALTOONA — Junior right-hander Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) was much more effective than three other Penn State Altoona pitchers who were unable to shut down the Lebanon Valley offense in a 22-0 non-conference loss at Juniata Civic Field last Tuesday.
Krise pitched 1-1/3 innings and allowed only one run on three hits. He had one strikeout.
In eight appearances, including two starts, Krise has worked 19 innings with a 5.21 earned run average. He has fanned 11, walked seven and hit two while surrendering 27 hits and 18 runs, 11 earned.
The Lions are 12-15 and still very much in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoff chase, tied for third place at 4-4.

DUBOIS — Freshman pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) made two starts for Penn State DuBois last week, including a one-inning stint against College of St. Joseph (Vt.) Friday when nine Lions followed him to the mound in a 7-4 non-conference loss at Showers Field.
He faced only three batters, striking out one, in his third start and seventh appearance for the Lions, who had won the opener of the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference twinbill 5-3.
In the nightcap of a doubleheader split with Indiana University of Pennsylvania three days earlier, Orsich started and took the loss in a 9-6 final. He pitched four innings with one strikeout, allowing six hits and five runs, two earned.
Sophomore catcher/third baseman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) saw action in the four games, drawing four walks in five at-bats and scoring one run.
He is hitting .364 with three runs driven in.
Orsich has worked 14-2/3 innings with a 6.75 earned run average, four strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsmen. He’s given up 17 hits and 17 runs, 11 earned.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
CLARION — Junior pitcher Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was the losing pitcher for Clarion in the second games of three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders last week.
In a 5-2 loss to Edinboro at Memorial Field on Wednesday, she pitched six innings and gave up five hits, with just two of the five Fighting Scots’ runs earned. She logged two strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles were shut out in her next two starts, 7-0 by visiting Lock Haven Friday and 8-0 in six innings at Bloomsburg Saturday.
Hoffman worked six innings with three strikeouts and one walk against Lock Haven, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs.
She pitched five innings at Bloomsburg with two strikeouts and one walk. The Huskies got to her for eight hits and six earned runs.
Hoffman has 17 starts in her 18 appearances, completing seven. Her earned run average is 4.09, and she has recorded 70 strikeouts in 100 innings, walking 34 and hitting five.
Clarion is 5-33 with a 1-11 record in the PSAC Central Division.
