Clearfield Seniors Look to Start New Tradition on Class Trip to Washington, D.C.

CLEARFIELD – Students in Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School’s Class of 2017 would like to start a new tradition on its upcoming trip to the nation’s capital.

Teacher Ms. Beth Sallack will be taking the seniors on a tour of Washington, D.C. May 19. Her request was approved by the Clearfield school board Monday night.

Approximately 180 – 200 students will go on the class trip. And, they requested more time to tour the capital, said Superintendent Terry Struble.

According to Principal Tim Janocko, administrators have applied for passes to visit the White House and are currently waiting for a response. The students’ trip already includes the U.S. Capitol.

It was noted that U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson of the Fifth Congressional District has been assisting school administrators.

In addition, students will tour the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the Korean and World War II Veterans Memorials and Arlington National Cemetery to observe the “changing of the guard” at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.”

For the first time, students will take part in a wreath laying ceremony at the Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials, and wreaths are being donated to the class.

“We’re hoping to make this a new tradition for our students,” said Janocko.
