Richard C. “Dick” Karchner, 93, of Woodland died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Karchner was born Dec. 25, 1922, the son of Richard A. and Ethel (Shirey) Karchner.

He had retired from Woolridge Coal Co. Mr. Karchner was affiliated with the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Clearfield Beagle Club and the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Karchner was a World War II veteran who received the bronze star for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre of Operation.

He also received a combat infantry medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and the European Theatre medal. His service was in the U.S. Army 34th and 168th Infantry Divisions. Some of the major battles he fought in were Monte Cassino and Anzio Beach.

He is survived by two daughters and a son, Betsy Hugney and Rick Karchner and his wife, Carole, all of Clearfield, and Bobbie Carlson of Victorville, Calif.; two grandchildren, Matt Karchner of Thailand and Pam Acey of Lancaster; four great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Karchner Greene of Nazareth; and a friend and companion, Janet Turner of Woodland.

Mr. Karchner was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria (Woolridge) Karchner, who died June 1, 2009 and to whom he was married June 19, 1945; a granddaughter, Virginia Hugney; a grandson, Mel Hugney; and two brothers, James and Jack Karchner.

Honoring Mr. Karchner’s wishes, there will be no public viewing.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22 at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc. of Clearfield with Dr. Duane A. White officiating. Burial will be at Bradford Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
