DUBOIS – Math students in the sixth grade at DuBois Central Catholic Middle School practice chess as a way to help them think objectively and plan ahead, both qualities are needed in chess, math, and problem solving.

Starleen Young stops to advise a student as she ponders her next move against her competitor.  In the background, several teams of students tackle their own chess games.

According to Young, all DCC sixth graders are taught chess and will participate in a spring tournament at the end of the school year.  DCC has found a pretty cool way to improve standardized math scores of its middle school students, she said.
