Obituary Notice: Marion Rita Howe

Marion Rita Howe, 80, of San Francisco, Calif., died Oct. 13, 2016, at her residence after a long battle with colon cancer.

She was born March 15, 1936 in Philipsburg to the late Thomas A. and Marion Bailey Howe. She grew up in nearby Morrisdale.

She leaves two sisters, Margaret Jane Howe of Springfield, Va., and Cecelia (John) Rudy of Morganville, NJ. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nora Marie Howe.

She is also survived by nephews, John (Annelena) Rudy and Christopher (Pinar) Rudy and by a great-niece and great-nephew, Amelia Ambrose and John Gabriel Rudy.

She graduated from Morris Township High School. She attended Penn State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and a Master’s degree in history.

She was a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a past member of the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Calif.

By profession, she was an editor. She had worked at the American Historical Association in Washington, D.C., and later at Harvard University Press in Cambridge, Mass.

She moved from Boston to California where she did editing for several Scholars’ Publishers. Her mother and sister, Nora Marie, later moved to Fremont, Calif., to be near her. She saw to their care as long as they lived.

She was a communion minister and lector at Santa Paula Church in Fremont, Calif., St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., and St Ignatius Church at the University of San Francisco.

Family and friends will be received from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Morrisdale, where rosary will be recited prior to Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Morrisdale, with Father Joseph Staszewski as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
