Obituary Notice: Thomas Alan Korthaus

Thomas Alan Korthaus died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Sept. 25, 2016 in DuBois at the age of 83.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and children, Michael Korthaus and his wife, Tracey of Loveland, Ohio and JoAnn Kelly and her husband, Peter and Alan Korthaus and his wife, Jodi, all of Media, Pa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Martha, and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Keliher.

He was born Aug. 26, 1933 in Indianapolis, Ind., to Clarence and Martha Korthaus.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served for four years. While he was stationed in Japan, he played baseball for the U.S. Air Force team.

He married Elizabeth Ann Keliher in 1956 and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds organization to play minor league baseball.

After moving to New Carrollton Md., he began working for Safeway as a grocery merchandiser. Over the next nine years, he and Elizabeth had three children, Michael (Tracey), JoAnn (Peter) and Alan (Jodi).

He continued his career in the grocery business, taking a position with McCartney-Holman in Jackson, Miss., and then First National Food Stores in suburban Boston, Mass.

He was an executive with Supervalu Charley Brothers in 1979 in New Stanton, Pa., and married Carol Persichetti in 1982 in Greensburg, Pa.

The couple lived in Seven Springs, Pa. In 1983, he was recruited by the Penn Traffic Company in DuBois as vice president of merchandising and marketing, and the couple moved to Treasure Lake, Pa. He retired in 1996.

He was the quintessential patriarch and loved being with his family and extended family. Dad, Pop Pop and Uncle Tom was a role model to his children, grandchildren, Daniel, Thomas, Christopher, Joseph, Kevin, Kyle, Allison and nieces and nephews.

He was also an avid golfer and continued to play the game throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church in DuBois.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer and Fr. Edward Walk co-celebrating.

Full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard from the church. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family suggests that memorials be made to DuBois Central Catholic Schools, P.O. Box 567, DuBois, PA 15801.
