Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson hit with pie

Sacramento mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson was hit in the face with a pie Wednesday night.

A man walked up to the two-term mayor at a community benefit at a local high school, grabbed him and slammed a pie in his face, said Crystal Strait, the mayor’s press secretary.

A brief scuffle occurred, Strait told the Sacramento Bee.

The suspect was identified as Sean Thompson, 32, who suffered minor injuries during the incident, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Thompson was arrested on felony charges of assaulting a public official.

“The mayor is doing well and appreciates everyone’s support,” Strait said.

The former Phoenix Suns point guard announced last year that he would not seek a third term as mayor of his hometown, and will leave the office this year.

He is married to Michelle Rhee, the former chancellor of Washington, DC schools, who had accompanied him to the event.

Johnson tweeted that he was “doing fine” and thanked the police for being there.
