MEN’S GOLF
GREENVILLE — Junior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) continued his outstanding early-season play for Thiel early last week by finishing third with a 72 and second with a 76 on consecutive days in multi-team tournaments.
On Monday, he matched par at the Country Club of Meadville to climb from tie for eighth to third with a 147 total, four strokes behind medalist Colin Laszlo of Wittenberg, for the two-day Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College.
Thorp followed up with 76 in the Grove City Fall Invitational at the Grove City Country Club to finish in a three-way tie behind medalist Ben Biss of the host team, earning runner-up honors with a better score than Grove City’s Cole McCook and Saint Vincent’s Nate Yackovich for the tiebreaker holes.
Thiel placed 16th of 18 teams in the Kuhn Invitational with a 652 (329-323) and sixth of eight teams in the Grove City Fall Invitational with a 340.
Thorp owns three top-five finishes in four tourney appearances, including the Penn State DuBois Invitational championship with a 2-under-par 69 at the DuBois Country Club Aug. 30.

BRADFORD — Junior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) carded rounds of 87 at the Sinking Valley Country Club Saturday and 84 at the Summit Country Club Sunday as Pitt-Bradford competed in the first Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.
The Panthers finished 11th among 15 teams in the Penn State Altoona Invitational with a 335 score and ninth of 12 teams in the Mount Aloysius Invitational with a 334 total.
Gardner tied for 50th among 73 players the first day and tied for 28th in the 61-player field Sunday.
The Panthers had been idle since Sept. 6, when Gardner shot an 85 at the Glen Oaks Golf Club in East Amherst, N.Y., to help them take second in the four-team Medaille Invitational.

FOOTBALL
READING — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and sophomore linebacker Nick Kovalick (Woodland/Clearfield Area H.S.) were Lycoming starters Saturday afternoon when homestanding Albright relied on defense for a 17-3 Middle Atlantic Conference win.
A crowd of 1,869 was on hand for the annual Pretzel Bowl battle in Shirk Stadium and saw Lycoming (1-2, 0-2 MAC) manage just the one field on five trips inside the Albright 30.
Kovalick made two solo tackles for the Warriors, upping his season total to 11 with three for losses of 12 yards. He also had assisted on three stops.

LATROBE — Junior Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) had one tackle and one assist in his second start at strong safety for Geneva (1-2) Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Tornado defense held Saint Vincent (3-0) to 276 yards, but five turnovers proved costly as the hosts prevailed 28-21 in front of 1,144 fans who turned out for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener at Chuck Noll Field.
Jacobson has made 12 stops, seven of them solo and one for a loss of one yard.

GETTYSBURG — Junior Jon Janocko (Clearfield) returned to the starting lineup at left guard as Juniata remained unbeaten by piling up 459 yards of offense in a 41-35 Centennial Conference victory over Gettysburg at Shirk Field with 2,367 fans looking on in Musselman Stadium Saturday.
The Eagles, 3-0 overall, are one of three teams off to a 2-0 start in the conference.

CLARION — Freshman Jake Terry (Curwensville) is a 6-0, 170-pound quarterback for Clarion, which begins Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division play with a 1-2 record.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CLARION — After playing on defense early in the season, junior Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) extended her string of starts as a midfielder to four games as Clarion split a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games last week.
The Golden Eagles (2-4-1, 2-3-1 PSAC) scored their first goal in 339 minutes to nip Millersville 1-0 at Memorial Stadium Saturday. Their trip to Erie ended in a 2-0 loss to Mercyhurst Tuesday when they got off only two shots.
Freeberg has stayed on the field throughout six of her seven starts, recording one assist and one shot on goal.

FARMVILLE, Va. — Sophomore forward/midfielder Heather Thorp (Curwensville) made her fifth appearance for St. Francis (2-8) in a 2-1 double-overtime non-conference loss to Longwood Sunday afternoon.
