Continuing towards American energy independence

After the Arab oil embargoes of the 1970s, the federal government began seeking ways to lessen America’s dependence on oil from the Persian Gulf. Energy policies enacted under the presidencies of Nixon, Ford and Carter incentivized power plants to switch from oil to coal, hydropower, or nuclear power and also to increase energy efficiency in homes and businesses.
