Initiatives Aim to Unite Local Farmers, Community Members

ST. MARYS – Headwaters Charitable Trust is proud to announce two initiatives aimed to unite local farmers and community members.

First, the trust has been approved to accept and redeem Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at the St. Marys Farmers Market.

EBT cardholders will be able to purchase vouchers that can be spent at the market vendors’ booths. The goal is to help EBT households obtain healthy food options while supporting local vendors.

The second initiative involves Headwaters Charitable Trust’s promotion of market style community-supported agriculture (CSA).

For the market style CSA, the trust will sell cash crop vouchers that can be redeemed at the St. Marys Farmers Market vendor booths.  The value of the vouchers will be 10 percent higher than the purchase price.

For example, $100 will purchase $110 worth of vouchers. The goal is to increase interest, attendance and sales at the Farmers Market and at local participating farm stands.

There are plans to expand both programs to additional Elk County Farmers Market vendors and farm stand owners next season.

Headwaters Charitable Trust was established in 1989 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization to conserve, protect and develop the resources of northcentral Pennsylvania for the social and economic well-being of its citizens.
