Gay rights group slams Trump, Rubio event

Gay rights advocates are blasting Donald Trump and Florida Senator Marco Rubio for planning to campaign with what they call an anti-gay religious group.

The Florida Renewal Project is hosting an event Thursday in Orlando titled “Rediscovering God in America Renewal Project.” Rubio, who is campaigning for reelection, is a headline speaker. Trump is scheduled to make an appearance, according to the American Renewal Project.

The Human Rights Campaign slammed the Republican candidates’ participation in the event, which is near where 49 people were killed in June in the Pulse nightclub, a popular gay spot.

“Just when you think Donald Trump and Marco Rubio couldn’t go any lower, they announce plans to court anti-LGBTQ activists in Orlando,” the group said.

“On Thursday, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio are going to seek votes from people who fundamentally believe we are not equal, who support dangerous and harmful conversion therapy and who have worked to export anti-LGBTQ hate abroad,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
