Runner’s tweet of Olympic dreams comes true

Just bought a lottery ticket? Show it to Morolake Akinosun; she can probably tell you if it’s a winner.

No, really, she’s pretty good at seeing into the future, especially since she’s already correctly predicted her own.

Akinosun, a runner on the U.S. Olympic team, tweeted in July 2011 that in five years she’d graduate from college and be in the Olympics.

Over the weekend she tweeted that her bold predictions were coming true, just like she said.

Akinosun started dreaming big when she was 17 and still in high school in her hometown of Aurora, Illinois. Sure, foreseeing graduation from college is pretty common, but making an Olympic team? Now that’s a leap of faith, and a lot of hard work.

“It wasn’t always easy, and no one knows the work that I put in the five years in between the two tweets,” Akinosun told BuzzFeed. “I put in a lot, a lot, a lot of hard work over the course of the five years, and I went after my dream.”

Akinosun earned a spot in the 4×100-meter relay, and she could do well. She won gold in the event at last year’s Pan American Games. She’s also a two-time NCAA champion in the 4×400 meters.

Her latest tweet, shared almost 200,000 times, has gotten lots of love online, with people congratulating her and saying she inspired them to follow their dreams.

“So if you have a dream, I want to encourage girls to go ahead and go after it,” Akinosun told BuzzFeed, “no matter how big it is, no matter how many people think your dream is unachievable.”
