CLEARFIELD – Although it might be thought of as a good deed, Clearfield Borough police would like to warn area motorists not to lend out their “My Sheetz” bonus cards at the gas pumps due to a new scam.
According to Sgt. Greg Neeper, a suspect has visited the Sheetz in Clearfield Borough three or four times recently, and each time has asked a patron nearby to use their bonus card to get gas.
The suspect would then allegedly swipe the card at their gas pump, fill up their vehicle and drive away without paying for it. “That card contains all of your personal information,” Neeper said. “The store then comes back to you for payment.”
Neeper said that upon further investigation, Clearfield police were able to determine what had occurred and have identified a suspect in the incidents. Charges are also expected to be filed in the near future.
“But we’re afraid others will fall victim to this scam,” Neeper said. “We’re asking people not to lend out their bonus cards … You think you’re doing a good deed but the good guys always finish last.”
