Michelle Fields, the former Breitbart reporter who at one point sought battery charges against Corey Lewandowski, needled the recently ousted Donald Trump campaign manager Tuesday, saying he was “not very good at his job.”
“I don’t think that Corey Lewandowski was probably very good at his job. He was simply a body man that organized these amazing events for Trump,” Fields told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “New Day.” “Yes, he’s out, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s still Trump. No one can make him say the things that he’s still saying.”
The Jupiter, Florida, Police Department originally charged Lewandowski with simple battery after he yanked Fields’ arm backward at a Trump campaign event in Florida. But the local prosecutor in Palm Beach County announced in April he would not prosecute Lewandowski. He denied touching or even meeting Fields, but the incident became one of the central storylines of the campaign at the time.
Trump stood by Lewandowski through that and other incidents, but eventually fired him Monday, amid an internal shakeup spurred by his children.
A Trump spokeswoman did not immediately return a request for comment, but Trump himself has had a rocky relationship with power players inside the Republican establishment who have either been slow to warm to him or outright rejected him, despite him becoming the presumptive Republican nominee.
Fields, who now works at the liberal outlet the Huffington Post and is supporting the #NeverTrump movement, accused Trump of being an inside player in Washington.
“This is someone who is a bully, this is someone who, like I say in my book, is a Washington insider,” Fields said. “I have profiled tons of Washington insiders, that is Trump, he has done a very good job at positioning himself as this outsider, yet he is someone who has built this amazing real estate empire through deals that he’s gotten with politicians.”
