Democrats are more satisfied than Republicans with their 2016 presidential options, according to a new poll, although significant blocs within both parties are unhappy with the remaining candidates.
The Gallup survey released Monday found 71% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say there is a candidate running who would make a good president. In contrast, only 59% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say the same. Both are down significantly from polling in previous months.
And both presumptive party nominees Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump face pockets of antipathy within their party, as voters who backed their primary rivals are still reluctant to get in line.
Among Republicans who hold an unfavorable opinion of Trump, just 31% say there is a candidate currently running who would make a good president.
And among Democrats who view Clinton unfavorably, 44% say there is a candidate they are satisfied with — down from 61% in May, suggesting the unofficial winding down of Bernie Sanders’ campaign has left a number of his supporters without a horse in the race.
The Gallup poll was conducted on June 14 and 15 among a random national sample of 1,021 adults. It has a margin of error of 4 points for the total sample of national adults, and a margin of error of 7 points for party-based samples.
