Georgia Sen. David Perdue asked attendees at a religious conference Friday to pray that President Barack Obama’s days be “few.”
“You know, I think we are called to pray. We are called to pray for our country, for our leaders, and yes, even our president,” Perdue said at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority Conference.
“You know, in his role as president, I think we should pray for Barack Obama. But I think we need to be very specific about how we pray,” he continued. “We should pray like Psalms 109:8 says. It says, ‘Let his days be few, and let another have his office.'”
The crowd laughed and applauded before Purdue continued his address.
“In all seriousness, I believe that America is at a moment of crisis,” Perdue added.
The next verse — which he did not mention — of the Old Testament passage confirms that the psalm is a death wish for an enemy of David, the King of Israel.
Verse 9 says “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”
Asked for comment, Purdue’s press secretary Carolina Vanvick said: “Senator Perdue said we are called to pray for our country, for our leaders, and for our president. He in no way wishes harm towards our president and everyone in the room understood that. However, we should add the media to our prayer list because they are pushing a narrative to create controversy and this is exactly what the American people are tired of.”
