Tropical storm warning issued for SC coast

A tropical depression in the Atlantic Ocean moved toward South Carolina on Saturday, prompting National Hurricane Center forecasters to issue a tropical storm warning for the state’s coastline.

The system comes as tourists hit the beaches for Memorial Day weekend.

The storm, which would be named Bonnie, was only expected to be a minimal tropical storm when it reaches the South Carolina coast. The system was expected to make landfall about 2 a.m. Sunday, said CNN meteorologist Jennifer Varian.

The primary impact will be 3 to 5 inches of rain with locally higher amounts.

Tropical Depression Two was located about 150 miles southeast of Charleston with sustained winds at 35 mph, the National Weather Service said. The storm was moving west-northwest at 13 mph, forecasters said.
