Donald Trump on Thursday again attacked Sen. Elizabeth Warren over her claimed Native American heritage, continuing his focus on a 2012 controversy from her Senate race.
“I think she’s as Native American as I am,” Trump said responding to a question about his continued back-and-forth with the progressive senator, whom Trump dubbed “Pocahontas.”
One local reporter, who earlier asked Trump whether he would recognize the sovereignty of Native American tribes, shouted that Trump’s moniker for Warren was “offensive,” a suggestion Trump scoffed at.
Trump also suggested that Warren was only able to get into the universities she attended because she claimed that she was Native American on her applications. He kept up that line of criticism in a tweet Thursday afternoon.
“I find it offensive that Goofy Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to as Pocahontas, pretended to be Native American to get in Harvard,” Trump tweeted.
Warren, a former Harvard Law School professor, quickly fired back on Twitter, saying, “Get your facts straight, @realDonaldTrump. I didn’t even go to Harvard — I’m a graduate of @UHouston and @RutgersU.”
The Massachusetts Democrat, who has said her mother was “part Cherokee and part Delaware,” has been a vocal antagonist to Trump. Earlier this week, she called the real estate mogul a “small, insecure, money-grubber who doesn’t care who gets hurt, so long as he makes a profit off it.”
Trump, who also said he was open to debating Warren, also slammed her as a senator who has accomplished little in her time in Congress, calling her “highly overrated.”
