Vice lays off dozens after naming new head of news

Vice Media has promoted Josh Tyrangiel, the head of its forthcoming HBO nightly news broadcast, to oversee news operations across the company, CNNMoney has learned.

The move, which is meant to unify the Vice News television and digital platforms, will put Tyrangiel in charge of VICE News, Vice on HBO weekly, and VICE on HBO nightly.

But the move will not come without cost: While Vice plans to make dozens of hires across production and editorial in the next month, his promotion will result in the loss of at least a dozen current employees.

Several of those employees were informed that they were being let go on Tuesday.
