Hillary Clinton leads Democratic presidential rival Bernie Sanders in New Jersey by double-digits, a new poll shows, with weeks to go before the state’s contest on the final day of the Democratic primary on June 7.
Clinton leads Sanders 54% to 40% among likely voters in New Jersey’s Democratic primary, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. Six percent of Democrats say they are undecided and 15% say they could change their mind before the contest.
Clinton’s large lead in New Jersey comes as Sanders continues to campaign. Though the Vermont senator is already mathematically eliminated from winning the Democratic nomination through pledged delegates, he has said he will stay in the race until July’s convention in Philadelphia.
In general election match-ups, the Quinnipiac poll found that Clinton leads Trump 45% to 38% in New Jersey, driven by wide gender and racial gaps. Trump leads among men 46% to 36%, while women back Clinton over Trump 53% to 32%. And though 48% of white voters prefer Trump to 36% for Clinton, the former secretary of state dominates among African-American voters, garnering 84% support.
The poll also found that Sanders tops Trump 49% to 37% in a hypothetical general election matchup, with the Vermont senator’s favorability numbers far higher than Trump or Clinton.
The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,989 New Jersey voters between May 10-16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
