BASEBALL
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Freshman catcher-third baseman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) started every game at the hot corner as Penn State DuBois closed out its first season since 1993 by going 2-2 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series last week.
Sorbera singled, stole a base and scored a run when the No. 7-seeded Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference champs eliminated No. 9 seed and PSUAC rival Penn State Beaver 4-3 after losing their opener 2-0 to No. 2 seed Rochester (Mich.) College.
The Lions followed up with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 seed Wright (Ohio) State-Lake Campus before being beaten 4-0 by No. 3 seed Cincinnati-Clermont 4-0 in the elimination bracket semifinals.
“It definitely takes a village of people to establish and create this success,” coach Tom Calliari was quoted in an article on the Penn State DuBois baseball website. “We recruited a different type of player; we recruited character first.
“There were countless hours of practice, recruiting, game day activities, everything. I wish I could pin-point one thing. I can’t.”
Calliari was named PSUAC Coach of the Year after the Lions won 15 consecutive conference games to earn the 2016 championship and qualify for the USCAA national tournament.
Penn State DuBois was 23-15 overall.
Sorbera hit .264 in 28 games, including 23 as a starter at third base or behind the plate.
He collected 14 hits, scored 13 runs and drove in 10 runs.
