CLEARFIELD – Karen Michael has been appointed as the District Executive for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Engineering District 2, which covers nine counties in the North Central region.

“I’m very pleased that this region will be guided by Karen’s decades of experience,” said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards. “Her leadership, with the dedication and talents of District 2 employees, will continue the region’s hard work on their transportation assets.”

Michael is responsible for the planning and supervising of the state highway system in PennDOT’s Engineering District 2 that covers Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Juniata, McKean, Mifflin, and Potter counties. Within the nine counties, PennDOT owns and maintains 3,731 miles of state highway and 2,186 bridges.

“It’s a true honor for me to step into the DE role here in District 2. This has been my ‘work home’ for a long time and I am excited and grateful to have this opportunity. Delivering transportation projects that bring value to our customers across our nine counties will continue to be a main focus at District 2,” said Michael.

Michael began her career with PennDOT in 1986 as a civil engineer trainee. Since that time, she has progressed through various engineering positions in District 2, including Portfolio Manager and, most recently, Assistant District Executive for Design. She is the second woman to permanently hold the District Executive position within PennDOT.

Michael graduated from Penn State University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. She has held her Professional Engineer’s license since 1992.
