Parts of Andrews Air Force base were placed into lockdown late Thursday afternoon following a report of a woman claiming to have a bomb near the main gate.
The woman was taken into custody shortly after the incident began around 5:15 p.m. ET, the base said. A law enforcement official told CNN the woman raised suspicions when she walked into the visitors’ center at the suburban Maryland military compound.
The base said in a statement that the woman claimed to have a bomb strapped to her chest, but no explosives were found.
Emergency personnel were continuing to secure the area and advised all base residents and personnel to avoid the area.
The base said no flights were redirected due to the incident, no missions were impacted and there was no impact on civilian property or businesses in the area.
“Our people are our most valuable resource and we take every threat seriously,” Col. Brad Hoagland, 11th Wing and Joint Base Andrews commander, said in a statement. “Our first responders train for these types of scenarios on a regular basis. Fortunately, this incident was diffused quickly and was determined to be a false-alarm.”
