Redden, Bishop, ‘D’ Key Lady Bison’s 3-1 Victory

SPRING MILLS — Shutdown pitching by Raeleigh Redden, a clutch hit by Aspen Bishop and near-perfect defense that pulled off three double plays made the Clearfield Area High School softball team a 3-1 winner over Penns Valley Monday afternoon.

Redden went the distance on a five-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk in the Mountain League game.

Losing hurler Harley Hess’ two-out bloop single near the right field line drove in the Lady Rams’ run in the first inning. Mikenna Lyons had led off with a hit and advanced to third base on two passed balls.

“Raeleigh was solid the rest of the way, and the defense played tremendous behind her,” Clearfield coach Bob Lewis said.

Twinkillings initiated by second baseman Alana Kochan in the second and fourth innings helped prevent Penns Valley from mounting any additional threats until the sixth, when Cassidy Stover singled, stole second and moved to third on Redden’s lone wild pitch

With one out, Hess lifted a fly ball to left that resulted in another DP when Stover failed to tag up.

Redden punctuated her fifth win and sixth complete game with a 1-2-3 seventh.

“That makes five double plays in two games,” Lewis noted.

Hess was equally stingy with Lady Bison batters, finishing with a six-hitter and eight strikeouts.

“She was pretty tough,” Lewis said. “We didn‘t have too many opportunities.”

Clearfield’s only baserunner through four innings was Lindsay Hand via an infield single.

In the fifth, the Lady Bison’s bid to draw even was thwarted when Abby Fedder was thrown out at the plate on Erica Hanes’ grounder to short.

“We gambled and went on contact trying to tie the game there,” Lewis said.

Hess couldn’t keep the Lady Bison off the scoreboard in the sixth frame, though.

Molly Sartin was hit by a pitch, Kochan beat out a bunt and Brooke Cline singled to fill the sacks with no outs, and Bishop promptly cleared them with a double up the right center alley.

The third win in the last four games boosted Clearfield’s record to 6-8, including 4-8 in the ML.

“We’re building momentum, and we talked about that with the team,” Lewis said. “This is the stretch drive and the playoff push, and we’re playing pretty good ball right now.”

Clearfield will be back at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday for a non-league make-up with Glendale. The first pitch is set for five o’clock, a half-hour later than the usual starting time.
