Sabula is Site for Historical Spring Walk

SABULA – Sabula, one of the most historic sites in the DuBois area, will be the location for the DuBois Area Historical Society’s eighth annual Spring Walk, Saturday, May 7.

Pam Kirk will lead the walk beginning at 10 a.m. from the breast of the Sabula dam. The program is free and open to the public.

Sabula Lake is an artificial lake constructed by John E. DuBois near the turn of the 20th Century as a holding location for his logging operation.

The dam was fashioned from fill obtained when the Pennsylvania Railroad and the B&O Railroad tunnels were cut through the same area.

Later, cottages were built along the shore of the lake taking on the resort aspect found decades later at Treasure Lake. The names of the earliest people to occupy the homes at Sabula Lake included a who’s who of early DuBois history including:  DuBois, Moore, Osborn, Hibner, and Gray.

Those planning to attend the walk are advised of limited parking in the area. Carpooling is recommended.

The North Point Fire Company has given permission to park at its lot, located approximately 3/10 of a mile from the breast of the dam where the walk begins.

Parking at the fire hall will involve walking along busy Route 255 to the walk’s starting point.

Last year’s Spring Walk at Luthersburg attracted 53 people. The walks have become a type of community reunion event.
