Leo S. “Zuber” Zawislak, 92, of DuBois died Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 12, 1923, he was the son of the late John and Catherine (Kot) Zawislak.
He was a 1941 graduate of DuBois High School.
On June 18, 1947, he married June (Haggerty) Zawislak. She survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
He retired from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, where he worked as a carman, after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, the George D. Montgomery American Legion Post 17, the James J. Patterson Post 813 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks. He was also an active member of the DuBois Area Honor Guard for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn M. Bowser and her husband, Joe of DuBois; a son, Joseph Zawislak of DuBois; three grandchildren, Steven and Kevin Bowser and Krista Frable; and eight great-grandchildren, Caiden and Dylan Bowling, Rowen Frable, Sarah, Benjamin, Rebekah Bowser, Zackary Berends-Bowser and Cole Bowser.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin “BuBu” Zawislak.
Friends will be received from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Kresinski as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.
