CLEARFIELD – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has begun replacement work on a Route 219 bridge in Clearfield County.

The 23-foot bridge dates from 1919 and spans Laurel Run about a mile northeast of Mahaffey. It carries an average of more than 2,400 vehicles each day.

Replacing the bridge will remove it from Clearfield County’s structurally deficient list and provide area drivers with a new, modern structure.

Temporary traffic signals were placed at the bridge on April 11 in yellow, flash mode. Starting Thursday, the signals will be fully operational and will control an alternating traffic pattern while the bridge is replaced through staged construction.

Overall work will include demolition of the current bridge, construction of a new cast-in-place box culvert, new tie-ins, and pavement markings. PennDOT expects the project to be finished by mid-October.

Francis J. Palo Inc. of Clarion is the contractor on this $1.1 million project.

Drivers are reminded to move through work zones with caution, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.
