Charles E. Mencer Jr., 81, of Philipsburg died Monday, April 11, 2016 at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.
Born March 20, 1935, he was a son of the late Charles E. Sr. and Mary Josephine (Gregor) Mencer.
Mr. Mencer was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Council No. 8701, Morrisdale, and a fourth degree member of the Pope John Paul II Assembly of Clearfield.
He had served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion, John Ashley Dennis Post No. 437, and the AMVETS, Post No. 159, both of Philipsburg.
He was a life member of the Hope Fire Company and the B.P.O. Elks, No. 1173, both of Philipsburg, and a member of the Society of Slovak Working Men of Osceola Mills.
Mr. Mencer was employed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation, as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. He was a 1955 graduate of the Philipsburg High School.
On Feb. 27, 1960 in Osceola Mills, he married the former Betty Ann Kozak, who preceded him in death on June 30, 2009.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Catherine and a brother, John F. Mencer Sr.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. Mencer III and his wife, Barbara of Hollidaysburg; three grandchildren, Julie Murray of Virginia, Meg Monteforte and her husband, Matthew of North Carolina and Timothy Mencer and his fiancée, Krista Smith of Philipsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Landyn Monteforte and Nora Mencer.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg, with the Rev. John Gibbons as celebrant.
Burial will follow at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Philipsburg, with military honors being accorded by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg.
The rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and an Elks memorial service held at 7 p.m., both on Thursday at the funeral home.
