Programs Planned at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – A number of programs have been planned at the Parker Dam State Park for April 22 through May 1.

Friday, April 22

All About Fishers: 

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Originally found in Penn’s Woods, the fisher has had a long journey to re-establishing itself in today’s forest.  Learn more about this furbearing predator and about conservation efforts that have led to seeing them here again.

Saturday, April 23

Woodsy Owl Volunteer Day: 

9 a.m. – Host Site (No. 107) AND 1 p.m. – Pavilion 1 

A variety of projects at various skill levels will be available to volunteers.  Friday, April 22, campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The normal overnight camping fee (for 4/22 and 4/23) will not be charged in agreement that campers participate in both the Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon work sessions that will be used to spruce up the park for the upcoming summer season.  Volunteers are also welcome to come out to the park just for the day.  Aside from the free weekend of camping, participants will experience the rewards of volunteering in the outdoors and improving our natural and recreational resources.

Woodsy Owl Awards:

5 p.m. – across from Host Site (No. 107)  

We’ll begin the program with the creation of a matchless fire to warm you.  Volunteers will be recognized for their efforts and can see what other volunteers have helped to accomplish throughout the day.  Come enjoy some fellowship with other park volunteers and enjoy the light refreshments.

Sunday, April 24

The Early Bird Gets Its Worm: 

9 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom 

Make sure to get an early start this morning as we head out on the Souders trail in search of songbirds.  This trail is over easy terrain and comes in just under one mile in length.  Please wear appropriate footwear.  The park will supply binoculars to borrow if you don’t have your own.

41st Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby: 

9 a.m. – Lake 

The annual Kid’s Fishing Derby will be held for children up to and including 13 years of age.  Adults may assist their children, but should have a 2016 PA fishing license.  Great prizes will be awarded.  Bait will be available at the site.  Food will also be available at the site.  Sponsored by Squirrel Tails for Trout.

Friday, April 29

Springtime Treasures: 

7:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Every spring seasonal pools draw various species of amphibians.  Join us to learn just what makes frogs and salamanders so cool!  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn of these seasonal treasures.

Saturday, April 30

Wildflower Walk: 

6:30 p.m. – outside Park Office

Come along for an easy walk outside of the Park Office in search of our floral signs of spring.  We should find some of the best colors of spring as a variety of species should be coming into bloom.

Sunday, May 1

Souders Trail Afternoon Hike: 

3 p.m. – Ball Field 

Come for a peaceful afternoon walk along one of the park’s most popular trails.  Learn about the history of the park as we look for remnants of the lumber era and signs of spring.  Please wear appropriate footwear.
