Bloom Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Three People

CLEARFIELD – A Curwensville man accused of assaulting three people at a local club pleaded guilty Monday in Clearfield County Court.

Shad Lucas Bloom, 27, 11669 Curwensville-Tyrone Hwy., Curwensville, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to three counts of simple assault and was sentenced to five months to two years in state prison by President Judge Fredric J. Ammerman.

He was fined $3 plus costs and he must pay over $800 in restitution.

Prior to sentencing, one of the victims addressed the court explaining that he still has problems as a result of the assault. He said he has double vision, and he has no smell or taste abilities. He asked to be reimbursed for a loss in his earnings.

Bloom also spoke, apologizing for what he had done and saying he wished he had acted differently. He stated that he was trying to defuse the situation and instead it “spiraled out of control.”

His attorney, Curtis Irwin, noted that Bloom is on state parole and will be transferred to a state prison to complete his sentence. He asked that Ammerman give Bloom a county sentence because he has already served five months. The county could parole him and then transfer him to state prison to serve out his parole violation, he suggested.

Ammerman commented that no matter what he did, Bloom would be going back to state prison and he couldn’t control what the state parole board did with Bloom. He noted that Bloom had almost finished his state parole when this incident occurred.

His parole sentence is from March of 2008 when Bloom was given five to 10 years in state prison for eight counts of aggravated assault. According to published reports, in the early morning hours of April 22, 2007 Bloom led police on a high-speed chase through Clearfield Borough and Lawrence Township, which ended with him crashing into a DuBois City Police car.

In all he struck three police vehicles and two officers were injured. He was originally charged with criminal attempt/criminal homicide in this case.

According to the affidavit of probable cause in the latest case, on Oct. 31 police were called to the Curwensville Moose in response to a report of an assault in the parking lot. After a number of people returned to the lot following a wagon ride, three people were involved in an altercation.

After this was broken up, they tried to enter the bar area but the victim was refused access by a member. Bloom approached the victim and they began arguing. Bloom then threw the victim to the ground, causing injuries. A second victim saw what was happening and yelled for Bloom to stop. Bloom then threw her to the ground causing her to be injured. After seeing this, the second victim’s husband approached Bloom, who struck him once in the face with a closed fist, knocking him unconscious. Bloom then entered his vehicle and fled the scene.

This third victim suffered several broken bones in his face and a concussion.
