Lady Tide Edge Visiting Johnsonburg 3-2 In Softball Action

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Lady Tide softball squad made it two for two on Tuesday afternoon with a home field win over visiting Johnsonburg, 3-2.

The victory has the Lady Tide sitting at 2-0 on the young season.

Speaking of Young, Curwensville pitcher Rylee Young surrendered just four hits, while striking out 11 with no walks or earned runs given up.

The Lady Tide scored the game’s first runs, two in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a couple of throwing errors by the Ramettes.

With two outs Curwensville freshman Keisha Maines singled to get things rolling.

Madison Bumbarger put down a bunt that was thrown away by Johnsonburg first baseman Ashton Watts that moved Maines and Bumbarger to second and third.

Lady Tide junior shortstop Hannah Dixon also bunted with Ramette third baseman Kylee Wall promptly throwing the ball away that allowed Maines to race home with the first run of the contest.

Young then followed with an RBI single that brought home Bumbarger.

Johnsonburg picked up its first run in the top half of the fifth inning to keep the score close at 2-1 in favor of the Lady Tide.

Curwensville scored in the bottom half of the fifth inning, in what proved to be the game winner, when with one out Emily Miller singled and Kelsi Bumbarger came on as her pinch runner.

A passed ball followed with Bumbarger moving to second base and then scoring on a Kaylee Sedgwick game winning double to right centerfield.

Johnsonburg picked up a run in the top of the sixth and threatened for more but the Tide defense came through to secure the victory.

Lady Tide second baseman Kaylee Harnett had two hits on the afternoon.

Allen Leigey, Curwensville head coach, said after the game, “The big thing was that we haven’t played a game since March 24 and we weren’t very crisp. Then when Johnsonburg threatened in the top of the sixth our defense came through enabling us to pick up the win.”

Weather permitting, the Lady Tide are to travel to St. Marys Wednesday to play Elk County Catholic with the first pitch scheduled for 4:15 pm.
