BASEBALL
DOVER, Del. — Freshman pitcher/outfielder Thomas Summers (Clearfield) notched his first win for Maryland-Eastern Shore by driving in the tie-breaking run with a ninth-inning double against Delaware State Saturday.
Summers came on in relief with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and faced only four batters. He gave up a two-out hit in the eighth but promptly picked off that runner.
In the ninth, his two-bagger to left center put the Hawks ahead 3-2, and he later scored. Closer Devin Repine then saved the 5-2 victory for Summers.
Summers also had a single for his first multiple-hit game.
Delaware State won the nightcap 4-3, but Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-19) triumphed 14-5 Sunday to improve its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record to 3-5. Summers started in right field both games.
Summers also pitched one inning in the Hawks’ 16-4 mid-week loss to Navy, allowing three hits and three runs with one strikeout, one walk and one hit batsman.
Summers (1-2) has seven mound appearances with a 6.30 earned run average for 10 innings. He has given up 14 hits, nine runs and four walks while striking out five.
In 19 games, he is hitting .195 (8-for-41) with three doubles, one home run and four runs batted in.

MANSFIELD — Redshirt freshman outfielder Curtis Collins (Clearfield) recorded his first hit for Mansfield with a single in a pinch-hitting role against Lincoln at Shaute Field last Wednesday.
The Mounties swept the non-conference doubleheader by identical 12-1 scores to make coach Harry Hillson just the third in Pennsylvania history in any division with 850 career wins. He’s the 12th active coach in NCAA Division II baseball to hit that milestone.
Mansfield (13-15) traded sweeps with Shippensburg in weekend action for a 3-9 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division record.
Collins has a .200 average with one stolen base in seven games.

GREENSBURG — Sophomore infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) singled in both games as Penn State Altoona split a non-conference doubleheader with host Saint Vincent Thursday.
He had a bunt single and scored an insurance run in the eighth inning of the Lions’ 9-7 nightcap win following a 4-3 loss.
The Lions were 1-3 in their first two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference twinbills against Pitt-Greensburg and D’Youville (N.Y.), falling to 7-18 overall.
Fulmer has 13 starts in 17 games with six hits and a .154 average. He has driven in two runs and scored two. He is tied for second on the team with 10 walks.

DUBOIS — Freshman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) played in four games as Penn State DuBois began Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference play by going 3-3 last week.
He made two starts behind the plate and one at third base, scoring two runs when the Lions (5-9) completed a sweep of Penn State Fayette with a 9-4 victory.
In 10 games, including five starts, Sorbera has a .133 average on two hits and scored three runs and driven in one.

SOFTBALL
WINCHESTER, Va. — It was a tough week for sophomore shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) and her Shenandoah teammates with pairs of road losses to Eastern Mennonite 10-5 and 9-1 at Harrisonville Wednesday and Guilford 6-3 and 3-1 at Greensboro, N.C. Sunday.
Vanderburgh had only one hit, her average tumbling to .231 (15-for-65). She has six runs driven in and 14 runs scored.
The Hornets are 2-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and 8-14 overall.

CLARION — Sophomore Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was the starting pitcher in three of Clarion’s five shutout losses last week.
The Golden Eagles (3-17) were swept 6-0 and 3-0 by Slippery Rock Wednesday and 17-2 and 9-0 by Indiana University of Pennsylvania Friday at Memorial Stadium and 8-0 twice at Lock Haven Sunday, with the last four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division games ending after five innings because of the Mercy Rule.
Hoffman pitched all three nightcaps, with her best outing a five-inning stint against Slippery Rock in which she surrendered three hits and three runs while striking out two, walking three and hitting one.
She worked a total of 12.1 innings and gave up 19 hits and 20 runs, 12 earned, with six strikeouts and eight walks.
Hoffman also had starts as the designated player and first baseman but had only one hit.
For the season, she is hitting .224 (12-for-58) with a team-high six doubles, one of Clarion’s two triples and three RBIs.
She has a 2-9 record and leads the Golden Eagles in appearances (12), starts (10), innings pitched (52.2) and strikeouts (39). Her earned run average is 5.32.
Redshirt freshman Tierra Shope (Curwensville) drew a walk in one of her two pinch-hitting appearances. She has played in 12 games with seven official at-bats.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Freshman Sarah Lash (Clearfield) of St. Francis (Pa.) hurled the javelin 33.17 meters (108 feet, 10 inches) Friday to place 19th among 31 entries at the 51st annual Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary at Zable Stadium and the Stimson Throwing Events Area.
With 25.5 points, the Red Flash finished 15th in the 43-team event that is the largest scored meet outside of the NCAA Championships.
