Donald Trump did something new — and relied on the much-maligned crutch of the modern American politician for his speech to a pro-Israel group in Washington on Monday.
Donald Trump used a teleprompter. At least there were prompters on either side of the real state tycoon and he appeared to be reading from them during his speech in support of Israel.
Earlier in the day, he said Hillary Clinton was “all talk” on foreign policy and “just reading it off a teleprompter.”
Trump’s use of teleprompter comes despite his long-standing stated position that presidents shouldn’t be allowed to use them.
“I’ve always said, if you run for president, you shouldn’t be allowed to use teleprompters,” he said to applause during a rally back in October in Georgia. “Because you don’t even know if the guy’s smart.”
“I don’t use teleprompters,” he said in January, criticizing Hillary Clinton for using one. “Wouldn’t that be easy, teleprompters? I watched Hillary the other day and she has the biggest teleprompters I’ve ever seen. In fact, if you’re sitting on that side of the room or that side of the room you can’t see her because when they are outside, they are painted black and you can’t even see her.”
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
