Construction worker dies after falling from 53rd floor of L.A. skyscraper

A construction worker plummeted 53 floors to his death in downtown Los Angeles, hitting a moving car after falling from the tower, authorities said.

The worker was on his second day on the job Thursday at the unfinished Wilshire Grand Center, where the incident occurred, CNN affiliate KTLA reported.

He struck the back of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

A woman driving the car was hospitalized.

Turner Construction, the company at the site, said the man was not doing anything work-related at the time of the incident.

It declined to elaborate, saying it is awaiting a coroner’s report.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased,” the company said in a statement to the affiliate. “We are also sending our deepest sympathies to our loyal and dedicated workers for whom today’s tragedy is deeply saddening.”

The 73-story Wilshire Grand Center is scheduled to open next year.
