Fort Worth police officer, suspect shot

A Fort Worth, Texas, police officer and one of two suspects were shot during a gunfight Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Police said on their Twitter account that the officer was hospitalized with several gunshot wounds.

“Our officer is alive and we’re happy for that,” Chief Joel Fitzgerald told reporters. “The officer is very lucky at this time.”

The officer was not identified, as family members were still being notified.

Authorities didn’t comment on his condition.

Cpl. Tracey Knight of the Fort Worth police said earlier the shooting followed a car chase that ended with the two suspects running from a vehicle into a heavily wooded area.

The officer, who has been with the department since 2009, followed and a gunfight ensued.

One suspect was hit, and one was on the loose, police tweeted. At least one of the suspects was wanted on a felony warrant, the chief said.

Residents in the area were asked to stay inside. CNN affiliates KDAF and KTVT reported the shooting took place in west Forth Worth.

The suspect who was on the loose was identified as Ed Russell McIver Jr., 20. He is said to be armed and dangerous. More than 100 officers were looking for him, Fitzgerald said.
