The rapper 50 Cent may “get money,” but in this case it’s fake.
Curtis J. Jackson III told a Connecticut judge on Tuesday that the bundles of money in Instagram photos he posted were not real.
The photos included one showing him lounging on a bed with wads of bills, but they were bundles of fake prop money, he told the court.
News of the fake money was first reported by the Hartford Courant and The Wall Street Journal.
Jackson was asked to appear before the court to explain the photos since he’s currently involved in bankruptcy proceedings.
According to a court filing, the photos used fake cash and are part of Jackson’s “routine social media marketing activities.”
Jackson’s lawyers maintain that he didn’t use hidden assets and has disclosed all of his money accurately.
The original summons came in February from a judge who said she was “concerned about allegations of nondisclosure or a lack of transparency in the case.”
The photos were first mentioned in court documents filed by headphone maker Sleek Audio, SunTrust Bank and 50 Cent’s ex-girlfriend. The three parties are involved in Jackson’s bankruptcy case and claim he owes them a total of $29 million.
Jackson filed for bankruptcy in July. He has said that although he still brings in millions, he’s being hurt by costly lawsuits.
Since declaring bankruptcy, Jackson has made fun of the predicament he’s in on social media.
The photos, which Jackson began posting in October, show him surrounded by piles of $100 bills. In one he’s even used the cash to spell out the word “B-R-O-K-E.”
