John Kasich: ‘This thing is gonna go to the convention’

John Kasich said Friday that he expects a contested Republican convention in July.

“Listen, when I win Ohio, and we’re doing better in other northern states as well … this thing is gonna go to the convention,” the confident Ohio governor said on CNN’s “New Day.

The Ohio governor has bet his presidential campaign on a win in his state, which coupled with strong showings in other friendly northern states, he plans on using as a springboard toward the nomination. But Kasich’s comments Friday were an explicit admission that even a series of victories in later nominating contests may not be enough to win the nomination outright.

“That’s what I think is gonna happen,” Kasich said of a contested convention. “It’s gonna be a very exciting time, and why not?”

“In this crazy, crazy year, of all the things that have been said, all the fighting that’s gone on — you know, whatever crazy can happen seems to.”

Ohio will vote in the Republican primary on March 15 and awards its delegates on a winner-take-all basis.
