CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville girls basketball team was hoping for the two game season sweep over visiting Harmony on Tuesday night. However, the Lady Owls had other ideas, coming up with a thrilling, down to the wire, 49-44 win over the Lady Tide at Patton Hall.
Curwensville won at Harmony on January 15 , 51-38, which was the first win of the year for the Lady Tide.
The Lady Tide have only themselves to blame, missing a whole mess of lay-ups and a whole mess of free throws.
Hitting just 12 of 28 free throw attempts and all the missed lay-ups didn’t escape Lady Tide head coach Eric Duriancik, saying afterwards, “We have got to make the lay-up and free throws. We just missed way too many of both tonight to pull out the win.”
With Lady Tide juniors Christene Limbert and Hannah Dixon paving the way, the Tide jumped out to an 11-4 margin after the first quarter.
Limbert scored six and Dixon netted four, and Curwensville scored the last five tallies of the opening eight minutes.
The Lady Tide took its biggest lead of the game at 14-4 to start the second frame, thanks to three of four from the line by Limbert.
Harmony then outscored Curwensville the remainder of the second quarter, 12-8, to trail by just six at the break, 22-16.
The third quarter was a another dogfight for two teams struggling to find wins this season.
The Lady Tide did stretch its margin to eight, 32-24, with 2:03 to go in the third on a bucket and subsequent sucessful free throw by Limbert.
Then, once again, the Lady Owls came right back, scoring the last six points thanks to two baskets by Chloe Bracken and one by Tarra Hauser to end the quarter down by just two, 32-30.
Bracken opened the fourth stanza by knocking down a three point shot that gave Harmony its first lead of the battle, 33-32 at the 7:45 mark.
The two squads went back and forth until Lady Tide freshman Madison Weber made one of two from the charity stripe to put Curwensville into the lead, 38-37 with 4:45 remaining.
The lead would change hands three more times before the Owls took control, never trailing again.
Shauna Guy, did however, knot the game for Curwensville at 44-44 with a free throw and just 38 seconds left.
Then sophomore Josie McKee took the game under her wing for Harmony with a field goal and the free throw after the foul that put the Owls up 47-44 with 26 ticks remaining.
McKee went to the line with two seconds to go and calmly knocked down both ends of two more foul shots to ice the game, as Harmony won for the fourth time this season, moving to 4-16.
Duriancik spoke about Limbert and Kristina McCracken, “I thought that Limbert did a good job in the post and kept battling all night long and I also thought that Kristina McCracken played hard tonight and filled some minutes for us, especially in the first half.”
The Lady Tide were led on offense by Limbert with 19 and Hannah Dixon hitting for a dozen.
Tarra Hauser scored 18 points with teammate McKee added 10 for Harmony.
Harmony won the junior varsity game, beating the Lady Tide 35-12. Madison Weber had five points for Curwensville while Chloe Bracken hit for 11 for the Lady owls.
The Lady Tide (2-19) closes out its 2015-16 season with a home game on Wednesday night against MVL rival Moshannon Valley. The junior varsity game tips off at 6 pm with the varsity contest to immediately follow.
Curwensville lost to the Damsels on Saturday 62-42.
Playing in their final game for the Lady Tide will be seniors Shauna Guy and Kristina McCracken
