New Hampshire restaurants offer recipe for success to candidates

You can’t go to a diner in New Hampshire before the primary without the possibility of running into a candidate. They’re everywhere and they want your vote.

We asked those who know these restaurants best to offer advice to candidates in their final visits to these popular eateries.

MaryAnn’s Diner in Derry is a 1950s-style restaurant, which offers candidates a unique opportunity to scoot around Cadillac paraphernalia and poodle skirts as they attempt to shake patrons’ hands. And, when in Derry, be sure to sign a potato (one of the building blocks of the town’s industry at one time).

The Red Arrow is a 24-hour diner in downtown Manchester that has drawn candidates for decades. First-timers, like Donald Trump, can expect a warm welcome by a ringing of a bell in a ceremony called “being devirginized.”

The Barley House, located right across the State House in Concord, is one of the most frequently visited restaurants by candidates on the campaign trail. Whether they’re stopping by after filing for the primary or holding an event in the basement, candidates may be tempted to try “New Hampshire’s best burger.”
