Golden Tide Matmen Defeat Vikings 40-33

FLINTON — Bonus points in their three on-the-mat wins made the difference for the Curwensville Area High School wrestlers in a 40-33 victory over Glendale Friday night.

With the host Vikings up 12-0 after the first two weights, junior 145-pounder Mason Lancaster swung the momentum in the Golden Tide’s favor by major decisioning Bo Kuhn 13-4 for his first win of the season.

All-important back-to-back falls by senior Logan Charles at 152 and junior Eli Jacobs at 160 put Curwensville in front to stay at 16-12.

Charles (4-10) needed only 1:02 to pin Douglas Beeny and Jacobs, 2-3 after missing time because of an injury, earned a fall at the 4:46 mark against Matthew Yeckley, one of four Vikings with winning records.

“Eli wrestled a hard-fought match and ended up getting a big pin for us,” Curwensville coach Dean Swatsworth said.

Four forfeits then carried the Golden Tide to their seventh win in 18 dual meets. Those went to Ben Junod at 170, Jeff Harvey at 195, Blake Passarelli at 106 and Dylan Myers at 126, the latter after the Vikings had trimmed it to 34-33.

“We didn’t get all the match-ups we wanted because of all the moving around, but I thought we wrestled pretty well,” Swatsworth said. “We had a few that didn’t go our way, but that is expected in wrestling. We still need to work on some little things that will help us get the edge in those matches we lost.”

Three Golden Tide matmen came out on the short end of close duels, Hunter Lancaster 2-1 to Garrett Stephenson at 182, Stephen McClure 4-2 to Brandon Simmers at 220 and Seth Woolcock 2-1 to Brent Kuhn at 120.

Glendale (4-10) also got falls from Isaac Krause at 138 and Nathaniel Simmers at 285 and received two forfeits.

“Overall, it was a good match,” Swatsworth said. “We just need to get back in the room and work on getting better for next week.”

Curwensville goes to Johnsonburg Tuesday and Brockway Thursday, two opponents the Golden Tide will be seeing again in the District 9 Class AA Tournament at the end of the month.
